Car Key Programming in Longbridge & South West Birmingham
Quick answer

A cut blade alone will not start most modern cars: the key's transponder chip must be coded to the vehicle's immobiliser, and the remote buttons must be synced to the central locking. We carry mobile key programming equipment to your driveway, workplace or roadside, so the electronic side of a new key is handled wherever the car happens to be.

What Does Coding a Car Key Involve?
Coding a car key means writing your vehicle's security data to the new key and registering the key with the car. Nearly every car built in the last two decades has an immobiliser: a small chip inside the key head talks to a receiver around the ignition or start button. If the codes don't match, the engine stays locked — which is why a freshly cut key that hasn't been programmed will turn in the lock but won't start the car.
Our mobile setup programmes the transponder chip, then pairs the remote functions — lock, unlock, boot release and, on some cars, the remote start or panic button. On many vehicles we can also add a new key while deleting lost or stolen keys from the car's memory, so an old key can no longer drive the car away.
Car Key Transponder Programming: How It Works
Transponder programming is done through the vehicle's diagnostic port or, on older cars, with dedicated cloning equipment. We connect to the car's onboard systems, place it into key-learning mode, and register each new key individually. Most jobs take under an hour from start to finish.
Some vehicles allow several keys to be stored at once, which makes this a good time to add a spare. Others have tighter limits on how many keys the immobiliser will hold — we'll check your specific model and tell you exactly what's possible before we begin.
Which Keys Need Programming?
- Standard transponder keys — the chip in the head must match the immobiliser.
- Remote flip keys and remote fobs — blade cutting plus chip coding plus remote pairing.
- Keyless entry and push-to-start smart keys — proximity coding to the car's receiver.
- Dealer-supplied keys ordered elsewhere — we can programme many of them even if we didn't cut them.
Reprogramming a Car Key After a Lost Key
If a key has gone missing, reprogramming the car — rather than just adding a key — is the secure option. By resetting the immobiliser's stored keys and registering only the keys you hold, the missing key is blocked from starting the engine. We recommend this whenever a key is lost rather than simply misplaced.
The same approach applies after a theft or a house move where you can't account for every copy. Message us your registration and we'll talk through the safest and most sensible route for your car.
Our Mobile Key Programming Service
We bring the programming equipment to you anywhere in Longbridge, Northfield, Kings Norton, Bartley Green, Weoley Castle, Selly Oak, Bournville, Stirchley, Cotteridge or Kings Heath — day or night. You don't need to tow the car anywhere, and you don't need the old key to be working: in most cases we can programme from the vehicle itself.
Programming is priced alongside the key, and the exact figure is always confirmed in writing on WhatsApp before we lift a tool. Send your make, model and year for a straight answer with no guesswork.
Our price promise
Every job is different — the price depends on your car's make, model, year and the type of key or lock involved. That's why we always confirm your exact price before any work starts: message us on WhatsApp with your registration or VIN and we'll quote you upfront. The price we agree is the price you pay.
